Diverticulitis

Diverticulitis is an inflammation or infection in the "pouches or pockets" of the colon.  It is caused by high pressure in the colon causing a small hole or tear resulting in stool getting outside the colon. Symptoms may include severe abdominal pain on the left side, fever, chills, or rectal bleeding, although some people may not have any symptoms. Diverticulitis is diagnosed by a CAT scan.

A high fiber diet including fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread and wheat or bran cereals, may be beneficial to help reduce pressure in the colon. Medication, including antibiotics are usually used to treat the infection in diverticulitis. Surgery is considered only when the symptoms are severe and do not respond to medical therapy.
