Gastric & Duodenal Ulcers

An ulcer is a small hole in the lining of the stomach usually caused by an infection called H-Pylori or chronic use of arthritis medication (NSAIDS) such a Motrin and Aleve. Risk factors include, smoking, alcohol, steroids, family history of ulcers, stress (this makes ulcers worse but does not cause an ulcer) liver disease, rheumatoid arthritis, type O blood type.

Symptoms include burning or pain in the upper abdomen usually relieved quickly by taking antacids.  Symptoms usually re-occur within 1 to 2 hours. Stomach ulcers may get worse with food but ulcers in the Duodenum (just beyond the stomach) get better with food. Complications include bleeding, vomiting, perforation (a hole in the bowel wall) and possible obstruction of the bowel.
