Gout is a type of arthritis caused by high uric acid levels in the blood. Gout attacks occur when uric acid crystals develop in a joint, resulting in inflammation, swelling and severe pain. It is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis in men over 40. Gout usually comes on suddenly at night and frequently in the big toe.
Risk factors include elevated cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney problems. Gout usually gets worse over time unless the uric acid levels in the blood are controlled. Gout may be triggered by drinking alcohol, certain medications, stress, and crash diets. Eating rich food may trigger an attack, but does not cause gout.
